I firmly believe that a trained dog is a happy dog and happy dogs make for happy owners. A well trained dog is a pleasure to live with and will provide you with loving companionship throught his life. Such rewards do not come without effort though. A successful class experience requires that you attend classes regularly and practice daily. The commitment in time is relatively small. Generally about 30 minutes per day dedicated solely to practicing the lesson for the week and one hour a week for class. You will also find that every time you interact with your dog, grooming, walking, playing, is a training opportunity as well. I began training dogs in 1975 with my first obedience dog, a Weimaraner. I began giving classes in 1980, starting with basic obedience classes and continued training over the years with group and private classes and later added puppy training classes. I have also taught obedience to 4-h dog project members with my students going on to earn local, county and state awards. I have worked with Australian Shepherds, Weimaaners, Springer Spaniels and Bloodhounds personally and breeds from giant to toy in my classes. I firmly believe that positive training methods work best and my classes are structured with that in mind. Over the years, I've found that no single method works for all dogs, therefore I adapt my basic training strategy to best fit the individual dog/handler team.
Puppy Training Class - This class is for puppies aged 8 weeks through 5 months. The class is designed to start the young puppy on the road to being a well behaved dog who is easy to live with. Your puppy will learn to walk on a leash, come when called, allow himself to be groomed and handled and basic obedience commands. We will also deal with house training and some behavior problems. This class will lay a solid foundation to more formal obedience training later on as well as provide important early socialization. Our puppy training handbook comes with each class as well as a list of recommended reading. The class is 6 weeks long plus.
Beginning Basic Obedience - This class is for puppies and dogs age 6 months and up. The class teaches the basic commands for Novice level obedience exercises. Your dog will learn to heel on lead, come on command, and stay. He will also learn the commands of sit, down, and stand. Work in this class is done on lead. The class is 6 weeks long.
